The Simplest 2-Step Wake-Me-Up Zinger Slinger Smoothie
Hey Lovely,
Growing up, I detested the taste of ginger in anything, EVER! My mom used to make ginger tea and compel my brother and me to drink it because it was “good for us” (if you have a West Indian parent, you’d know that they think that tea is the solution to every ailment). Alas! Sometimes she would use straws or sippy cups, hoping that would coax us into drinking, but we did not have it! The burning sensation as it went down was too much! I would wail every time I had to swallow what was, at the time, that horrific tea.
The New Zing
I made this incredible fruit smoothie with some fabulous fruits, and I wanted to share it with you because it was THAT good. Nowadays, I see ginger as the thing that gives an irresistible zing to my favorite recipes. It is the key to making your mouth water for the next sip. Additionally, I am a lover of sour or tangy fruits and juices, so this smoothie was super satisfying.
Before I begin, I would like to let you know that all ingredients are purchased fresh. I chop them (step 1), pop them into a ziplock bag, and pack them into the freezer. I love the way the smoothie comes out with frozen fruit because no ice needs to be added.
The ingredients used in this simple 2-step smoothie will awaken your senses and give you the nutrients you need to start your day.
The Nutrition Details
The first (and my favorite) fruit will be sliced pineapples (1.5 cups). This amount of pineapples contains more than 100% of your required Vitamin C intake. It is also loaded with manganese, disease-fighting antioxidants, and other nutrients and enzymes that aid digestion and helps us to maintain a healthy metabolism.
The second and third fruits of this delicious smoothie are strawberries and red raspberries. Add 3 of each! Strawberries and raspberries are another great companion for this mega-nutrient smoothie. In addition to the Vitamin C and manganese they contain, strawberries contain folate, which is vital for normal tissue growth and cell function and essential for pregnant women and older adults. Raspberries (they are a sweet-tart flavor) are a great source of fiber for all! The next nutty and powerful ingredient added to this tangy blend is 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed. It’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit your heart and brain function.
Finally, add the element of ZING with a half thumb of ginger (or whole thumb, according to your taste, or you can use powdered ginger if you prefer). Ginger is beneficial because it aids digestion, reduces nausea, and helps fight the common cold and other infections. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and It’s one of the most healthy and powerful spices on the planet (i guess mom knew what she was talking about when she said, “it’s good for you”).
To top it off, add a pinch of salt to emphasize the flavor and a packet of stevia to sweeten, blend and enjoy!
