Hey Lovely,
Pssst…links are at the end of this post.
Let’s be honest; it is WORK to keep a home together. My mom told me that her mother once told her, “yie fraid work” (eyes are afraid of work). Meaning: If you look at the task as a whole, it seems impossible to get it done, so you are tempted to put it off for another time. Listen, I’ve done the procrastinating thing more times than I can remember because it’s just too much. It bothers me at the moment, then I move on to the next thing and forget about it until I have to use that same area or rummage through a thousand items before getting the one thing I need.
So I get it. Organizing your space can be so overwhelming! But fear not. My project management mind is at work to help you get through tasks related to optimizing your space for ease of use.
Here are a few ideas to get you started when the task looks like it will take forever. It will take a lot of work and effort, but guess what? It won’t organize itself, so we might as well get to it. Some questions to ask yourself are:
1. Which area can I tackle first?
Break down your areas into sub-areas. If your area is “the WHOLE BEDROOM,” decide which area in the bedroom you’d like to start with. Is it the closet? Where in the closet would you like to organize first? Bags, shoes, clothes, or accessories? Choose one, then move on to the next question.
2. How do I want the end product to look?
Always begin with the end in mind. Research items that will make your space look cohesive. We can often be tempted to buy “just anything” just because it is on sale or will do to get the job done. Be thoughtful about how you want your space to look with respect to your design, style, and color, then decide how you will organize the area. Pinterest or lemon8 is an excellent place to start if you need ideas.
3. What do I need?
After deciding how you want your end product to look, begin to do your research on the actual items that will aid you in organizing this space. Trays, containers, baskets, and dividers contain items in an orderly manner so that you know the location of your items. To pull everything together, get matching containers, trays, baskets, and dividers to make your end result look cohesive.
4. How much will this cost?
What is your vision for the space? Is this something that you can afford to prioritize at this time? It really depends on you. There are times when you have to make a budget for it. Other times, you can use what you have on hand. Assess your needs, and if you want to upgrade your storage and space, plan to allocate an item or area per month to your budget until you’re all done. 1 per month =12 per year.
5. Who do I need?
Sometimes you need to ask for help when you don’t have the tools or the necessary skill set to get the job done. On the other hand, the work is much lighter with four hands rather than two. Whomever you choose to help ensure that they understand your vision and work with you to achieve it.
6. How much time will this take?
As much time as you want it to take. You are the master of your time. The duration can be as long or as short as you allow, depending on the task. Prioritize your tasks and allocate blocks of time to organize your space until you’re done. E.g., If the area you want to organize is large, Give yourself half an hour per day. Set your timer, and focus on your task until the time is up. Start again the next day. If the task is pretty straightforward, you could set your timer for 60 minutes and do nothing else but focus on it for that time.
I hope that you found these tips helpful to get you started on your organization journey.
